I had an awesome experience yesterday and I just had to write about it! I think it was a unique day for a few different reasons! Let me explain…
Friday I received a call from my daughter. Micki teaches at one of ESU 10’s schools, and yes, she teaches science! Anyway, they had checked out the “Star Lab,” our mobile planetarium, and wanted some help with running it for the day with their PK-4 grade students. As luck would have it, my calendar was open enough to allow me to say, “Yes!” #ILOVEASTRONOMY
It wasn’t until later that night that I realized I would get to show off the Star Lab to my two grandsons, who attend that school! And it wasn’t until the preschool group walked up the stairs to the wrestling deck yesterday, where we were set up, did I learn that my granddaughter would also be participating! #yay

So what made this day special? Of course, the grandkids! Drake, the kindergartener, was in my first group of the morning and he was asked to introduce me to his class! They were all very good! And like every time I see him, he gave me a hug hello, and a hug goodbye! I saw Drake a bit later when he was going to lunch and he waved at me like it was no big deal I was there! #lovethedrake |
I took a quick restroom break a bit later and ended up following the preschool class up the stairs. Quinn didn’t see me but I was able to see her in action with her friends, braids and bows and all! When they got up to the planetarium, Mr. Sullivan lined them up for a picture. Quinn finally noticed me, and based on the look on her face I would love to know what was going on in her head! After the picture, he asked if anyone knew who I was. Finally Quinn raised her hand and said, “That’s my GG!” I’m not sure what the 3 year olds got out of the Star Lab, but it was sure fun to see them! #Quinn
Ethan’s group made it up there after lunch. The third grade class was a big group but very interested in the activity. I asked a question about one of the constellations and one of the students answered. I knew it was E but said, “Who said that?” And all of them yelled, “Ethan!” Ethan is an exceptionally bright 8 year old, and that’s not just “GG Goggles!” #welovescience
Yes, the grandkids made the day pretty special, but another fun thing happened...I crawled out of the planetarium to see my daughter up there with her physics class doing a vertical jump lab! My favorite class to teach was physics, for a lot of reasons, but the labs we did were a big part of why it was so enjoyable. It was so fun to see her up there, doing what I used to do. Another fun twist? Micki was a student in my physics class about 15 years ago! #itsafamilything
At the request of Micki's seniors, I let them into the dome to have a quick tour of the “night sky.” Super polite kids--I’m sure it’s one of her favorite classes, just like it always was for me! #physicsrules
So the day was pretty fun for me! And it felt like it went full circle for a few reasons:
Science is cool!
Your children sometimes follow in your footsteps!
Grandkids like science too!
My job allowed me to have this unique and awesome opportunity!
